ARTIST STATEMENT

Scenery has universal appeal in it's context of being associated to memories.  I have artistically interpreted many of my favorite settings in multiple styles.

Sky, rock, trees and water, have always been particularly inspiring to me.  Rock presents metallic particles, surface cracks, patterns and massive contours.  Trees, notably dead ones, exhibit strong vertical and linear shapes.  The infinite sky - never the same twice.  Water holds special fascination.  Rivers are comprised of writhing bands of color and sparkle.  Flat water subtly vibrates curvaceous reflections of endless hue combinations.

All warrant a diversity of study to translate from the natural world into my artistic one.  The properties of all of these elements have been influential throughout my body of work.

Partial to wide-open spaces, my plein-air paintings are compositionally simple - large brushstrokes evident, expressing "breathability".  Sky, almost barren land and open water are my usual attraction, although, trees sometimes make their way into view.  Until I figure out how to paint faster - sunsets are done in studio!

In the studio, I work from photo reference to be sure the location is recognizable.  My aim is to create a heightened state of the scene, sometimes bordering on animated.  Subtle shades in colorless places are replaced with saturated color.  I am quite fond of a process whereby I assign only five or six pigments to an image and utilize mediums containing sand or glass beads as a means to create "pixels" for subsequent layers of paint.
