VISIONARY ARTWORK

JACKI BOSS

ARTIST STATEMENT

I spend a fair bit of time in my own head and create artwork without too much consideration for it's commercial appeal.  I simply have a need to do it and focus primarily on mood, process and technique.

My unconscious mind has been a frequent source of imagery for my work, alongside my daydreaming imagination.  Both sources are incomplete without the addition of what comes to me during my half-sleep.  My uninterrupted imagination toys with internal preoccupations, or solutions to compositional or technical dilemmas are worked out, as I fall into sleep (which often takes hours).

Translating the nonsensical atmosphere and frequent unsettling nature of my dreams is a challenging feat.  How perplexing it is and impacted by it, I am - effects how I choose to visually execute it.  Generally, representation of a dream is portrayed without the distraction of color, and usually executed in pointillism style to convey the illusion of a dream-like state.  I am intrigued with viewers who know me, well, see these pieces as "spiritual", and those who do not - find them "dark".

When expressing my inner thoughts I tend to depict "cracks", spiral the brushwork, or drip the paint or medium. I have a predilection for vertical lines and they frequent my body of work.  The act of ripping up paintings and reassembling into something new, is a method I utilize in replacing negative energy or memories. Migraines are a recurring issue in my life, and several beautiful artworks have been inspired by a few of the more intense ones!
